01 -
Spread softened butter on one side of each rye bread slice and set aside.
02 -
In a bowl, combine ground beef, black pepper, sea salt, and onion powder. Mix until seasonings are evenly incorporated. Shape mixture into three patties to match the size of the bread slices.
03 -
Preheat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and cook for 2–3 minutes per side. Lower heat to low and cook an additional 5 minutes, ensuring patties are thoroughly browned. Verify internal temperature reaches 71°C with a digital thermometer.
04 -
While the patties cook, stir together mayonnaise, ketchup, bacon bits, sweet relish, and sugar in a small bowl until smooth. Set aside.
05 -
Heat a second skillet over medium-low. Place a slice of buttered bread, butter-side down, into the skillet. Layer with two slices of cheddar cheese, one cooked patty, and two slices of Provolone cheese.
06 -
Spread sauce over the unbuttered side of a second bread slice and place it sauce-side down on top of the sandwich.
07 -
Cook assembled sandwich for 2–3 minutes per side, or until both sides are golden and toasted.
08 -
Repeat the assembly and toasting process for the remaining sandwiches. Remove from the skillet, serve warm.
