Heat 1/2 cup sugar and water until sugar dissolves completely.

Remove from heat and let cool about 5 minutes.

Add cranberries to syrup, stir to coat, let sit 10 minutes.

Remove with slotted spoon to wire rack, dry 1 hour until tacky.

Roll tacky cranberries in remaining sugar until coated.

Let dry 30 minutes until sugar hardens.
